So the story goes...
Three immortals in the guise of beggars sought food from a rabbit. Having nothing to give the rabbit offered himself by jumping into a blazing fire. Touched by this sacrifice, the immortals let him live in the Moon Palace where he became known as the Jade Rabbit.
